Thermes de Cluny

The Thermes de Cluny feature thick walls of alternating stone and brick, typical of Roman masonry from the first or second century. These ruins are the remains of a public bath complex that once covered the ancient city of Lutetia. Emperor Julian was proclaimed emperor here by his troops in three hundred sixty, effectively turning this site into a stage for imperial power. A medieval mansion was later built directly into the vaults, where the bathhouse still anchors the foundation of the museum today.
