The Centre Pompidou wears its guts on the outside. Bright blue pipes for air, green pipes for water, and yellow conduits for electricity climb the glass facade, leaving the interior floors completely unobstructed. When Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers won the design competition in nineteen seventy-one, they shocked Paris by turning the building inside out. Before this, museums were heavy, stone-clad palaces. This structure was a radical machine for art, designed to change how people experienced the culture held within its frame.
