The July Column rises as a bronze pillar topped with a winged figure of Liberty, gleaming gold above the Place de la Bastille. It commemorates the eighteen thirty revolution that replaced one king with another in just three days. Beneath the base lie the remains of hundreds of citizens killed during that fighting. King Louis Philippe intended the monument to honor the people who put him on the throne, though he was forced to flee the country during another uprising only eighteen years later.
