The Grande Galerie de l’Évolution is marked by a massive glass roof that covers a cavernous interior filled with thousands of taxidermied animals marching in a permanent procession. Built in eighteen eighty-nine, it served as the original zoology gallery for the Jardin des Plantes. While the displays look modern today, the building fell into total disrepair by the nineteen sixties. It remained a shuttered, leaking ruin for decades until architects transformed the interior space into a darkened, theatrical stage for the natural world.
