The Grand Palais features a roof made of six thousand tons of glass and steel that curves into a massive, translucent nave. Built for the nineteen hundred Exposition Universelle, the structure holds the largest glass roof in Europe. When construction began, workers discovered the ground was too unstable to support the heavy iron frame, so they sank two thousand oak piles deep into the soil to hold it steady. Those wooden stilts still keep the entire building from sinking into the earth today.
