The Place Charles de Gaulle is a massive traffic circle where twelve grand avenues converge, forming the shape of a star. At its center stands the Arc de Triomphe, commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his military victories. During the construction of the arch, a worker once accidentally fell from the scaffolding, becoming the first of many to leave a mark on the structure. Today, traffic loops endlessly around this stone monument, ignoring the fact that it sits atop a busy metro station.
