The Champs-Élysées stretches from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe as a paved axis lined with horse chestnut trees. Originally a marshy collection of kitchen gardens and meadows, it became a fashionable promenade under the influence of Marie de' Medici. In eighteen hundred and ten, Napoleon ordered the construction of the massive arch at the western end to celebrate his military victories. The street served as the royal road before transforming into the premier stage for French national parades and protests.
