The Axe historique cuts a straight line through Paris, stretching from the Louvre courtyard out toward the La Défense business district. It functions as a single, deliberate architectural perspective, linking monuments across miles of city streets. André Le Nôtre originally laid out the path for the gardens of the Tuileries, aligning them with the throne of the Sun King. Centuries later, architects placed the Arc de Triomphe and the Grande Arche directly along this same axis, locking the ancient and modern city together.
