The Hôtel de Salm is identifiable by the semicircular colonnade that opens directly toward the Seine. Built in seventeen eighty-two for the Prince of Salm-Kyrburg, the house gained notoriety when the Prince lost his head during the Reign of Terror. Napoleon later chose this site as the headquarters for the Legion of Honor, the order he created to reward military and civil merit. The original plans were so widely admired that Thomas Jefferson kept a copy of them to inspire the design of the White House.
