The golden dome of Les Invalides rises above the skyline, acting as a massive cap for the military museum beneath it. Originally commissioned by Louis the fourteenth in sixteen seventy, the structure served as a hospital and retirement home for war veterans. Today, the complex houses one of the world's largest collections of military history. In eighteen forty, the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte were brought here from Saint Helena, and his red quartzite tomb remains the centerpiece of the vaulted chapel.
