The Musée de l'Orangerie holds two oval rooms containing Claude Monet's massive Water Lilies paintings. Built in eighteen fifty-two, the structure originally sheltered orange trees from the cold during Parisian winters. After the First World War, Monet donated his works to the French state, insisting they be displayed in spaces designed to his exact specifications. He wanted viewers to feel the peace of a calm, circular pond. The building underwent a complete redesign to house these murals exactly as he requested.
