The Grand Palais holds a massive glass barrel vault that reaches nearly one hundred fifty feet into the air. Built for the nineteen hundred Exposition Universelle, the structure served as a monumental gateway to showcase French artistic achievement to the world. During the fair, visitors walked under the iron arches to view thousands of paintings and sculptures. The workers finished the roof in a frantic rush, often working through the night, just hours before the opening ceremony greeted the President of France.
