The Petit Palais stands out with its grand, arched entryway topped by a golden, winged figure of Fame. Built for the nineteen hundred World Fair, the building was intended to be a temporary exhibition hall, much like its neighbor, the Grand Palais. While many other fair structures were dismantled, the city kept this one as a permanent home for fine arts. During the Nazi occupation, the basement served as a clandestine meeting place for members of the French Resistance who smuggled out documents under German noses.
