The Hotel Saint-Florentin features a severe, rhythmic facade of carved stone punctuated by tall, rectangular windows that hide a grand courtyard. Jean-Francois-Joseph de Talleyrand-Perigord commissioned this residence in seventeen sixty-seven, but the diplomat Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand truly defined its reputation. During the final months of the Napoleonic Wars, he hosted the Russian Tsar Alexander the First here. As the Russian army occupied Paris, Talleyrand negotiated the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy while the Tsar slept in the primary bedroom upstairs.
