The Théâtre de la Ville on the Place du Châtelet was known as the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt for nearly half a century. In eighteen ninety-nine, the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt took over the venue, becoming the first woman in history to manage her own theater. She ran the establishment with absolute authority for twenty-four years, personally overseeing everything from the lighting and costumes to the daily finances while performing in her own productions.
