Héloïse and Abélard's tomb

The tomb of Héloïse and Abélard holds the distinction of being the very first to be installed in the Père Lachaise cemetery. Their remains were moved here in 1817 as part of a deliberate effort to make the newly opened cemetery a desirable place for burial. By bringing the celebrated medieval lovers to the site, city officials ensured the cemetery would immediately gain cultural significance and attract public attention.
