The Belvédère de Belleville is a stark, rectangular concrete platform that hangs over the edge of the Parc de Belleville, offering a panoramic view of the Paris skyline. This site was once the location of the Pigeonnier, a seventeenth-century windmill that stood among the vineyards covering these hills. During the Paris Commune of eighteen seventy-one, the neighborhood’s fierce resistance centered on these slopes. Today, the platform provides an unobstructed gaze across the city, framed by the very ground where the city’s defensive barricades once stood.
