Père Lachaise Cemetery

Père Lachaise Cemetery is defined by the winding, cobblestone paths that climb the steep hillside, shaded by heavy chestnut and maple trees. It began in eighteen oh four as a desperate attempt to solve the city's overflowing burial crisis. Napoleonic authorities convinced Parisians to use this suburban plot by moving the remains of Molière and Jean de La Fontaine here. Within a few years, the social elite clamored to be buried near these famous graves, transforming a failed business venture into a permanent city.
