Church of Saint-Germain of Charonne

religious

The Church of Saint-Germain of Charonne features a square bell tower that looms over the hilltop, the only one of its kind left in Paris attached directly to a cemetery. It stands on a site where villagers gathered as far back as the twelfth century. During the French Revolution, the local priest, Jean-Baptiste de Beaufort, refused to swear an oath to the new state. He spent his final days hiding inside the heavy masonry walls before soldiers finally discovered his location.
