The bell tower of Notre-Dame-de-la-Croix de Ménilmontant rises like a spear over the Belleville hillside, visible from streets away thanks to its soaring height and Romanesque-Byzantine profile. This church stands on a site where villagers once gathered for an annual procession to ward off crop failure. When the architect Louis-Jean-Baptiste Folon built this structure in the eighteen sixties, he used iron framing hidden beneath stone, allowing for a massive interior. It became the final redoubt for the Paris Commune during its bloody end.
