Quartier de la Mouzaia

The Quartier de la Mouzaia consists of a labyrinth of narrow, paved pedestrian lanes lined with low, colorful houses and dense vegetation. These houses sit directly above former gypsum quarries that honeycomb the earth, making heavy construction impossible. In the late nineteenth century, workers built these modest homes on the stable ground left behind. A local shoemaker named Georges Gois named one of the lanes after his hometown, and soon, the entire area adopted the name Mouzaia.
