The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont rises from the landscape as a jagged, vertiginous cliffside surrounding a deep, emerald-green lake. This park occupies a former gypsum quarry that served Paris for centuries before Napoleon the Third ordered it transformed in eighteen sixty-seven. Engineers dynamited the rock, built a suspension bridge, and erected a Roman-style temple atop a sheer stone crag. For decades, the site functioned as a dumping ground for the city’s refuse until the park replaced the waste with cliffs, waterfalls, and steep, winding paths.
