Place de la République features a massive bronze statue of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, holding an olive branch high above the square. Beneath her feet, three stone figures represent Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. The Brothers Morice won the competition to build this monument in eighteen eighty-three. They chose to place it over a site that once held a royal gate, transforming a former defensive fortification into a dedicated space for political protest, public gatherings, and everyday demonstrations in the heart of Paris.
