Villa Belleville sits behind a plain, weathered wooden gate on Rue des Envierges, marked by a faded sign that gives away nothing of the cavernous world inside. This site served as an artist studio and creative hub, occupying a former industrial space where limestone was quarried long ago to build parts of Paris. Inside these cool, underground chambers, sculptors and painters once gathered to work in a subterranean silence that felt worlds away from the busy, steep streets of Belleville above them.
