The Cité des Chaufourniers, often called the Cité des 4000, spreads across La Courneuve with rows of long, concrete apartment blocks. During the nineteen sixties, planners designed this estate to replace cramped shantytowns with modern housing for thousands of families. Architect Henri Delacroix drafted the layout, aiming for efficiency and massive scale. In nineteen eighty-six, the city demolished the iconic fifteen-story building known as the Balzac tower, clearing the skyline to shift how the neighborhood connects to the rest of the city.
