The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is a vast, glass-walled structure anchored by the Géode, a polished steel sphere that reflects the surrounding park. It stands on the footprint of the former slaughterhouses of La Villette, which were abandoned in the nineteen seventies after becoming an industrial relic. President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing decided to transform the site into a science museum, commissioning architect Adrien Fainsilber to wrap the shell of the unfinished auction hall in a lattice of steel and light.
