Fort de Romainville

The Fort de Romainville consists of a massive hexagonal wall of stone and earth, surrounded by a deep, dry moat. Built in the eighteen forties, it served as a defensive ring around Paris. During the Second World War, the Nazis turned the fortification into an internment camp for women. From those barracks, thousands of prisoners were deported to concentration camps. Today, the site holds a massive television transmitter tower that dominates the skyline above the original, scarred masonry.
