Fort de Romainville

Fort de Romainville was constructed between eighteen forty-four and eighteen forty-eight as one of sixteen detached forts designed to encircle Paris. Its architects utilized a polygonal layout with protruding bastions to create interlocking fields of fire, ensuring that no wall could be approached without exposure to defensive artillery. While initially intended to protect the capital from foreign invasion, the site provided refuge for civilians during the bombardment of the Franco-Prussian War in eighteen seventy.
