Espace Niemeyer

The white concrete curve of the Espace Niemeyer rises from the pavement like a frozen wave in the middle of the nineteenth arrondissement. Oscar Niemeyer designed this structure to serve as the headquarters for the French Communist Party, completing the work in nineteen eighty. The building seems to hover above the ground, supported by only a few slender pillars. Inside, a sunken auditorium sits directly beneath a translucent dome, where workers once gathered under the curved concrete shell to debate party politics.
