The high limestone wall running along Rue Malher hides a sharp curve where the street narrows significantly. This path follows the exact footprint of La Force Prison, an eighteenth century jail notorious for the September Massacres during the French Revolution. In September seventeen ninety-two, armed crowds broke into the cells, killing hundreds of prisoners over several days. Royalists, common criminals, and accused traitors faced makeshift tribunals before meeting their end in the courtyard. The prison was demolished in eighteen forty-five.
