The Aquarium Tropical is located in the basement of the Palais de la Porte Dorée, a building constructed for the 1931 International Colonial Exhibition. The original intent for this space was to showcase the exotic aquatic life found within the French colonies to citizens in the capital. To provide a lasting impression, designers integrated these living displays into the architectural fabric of the palace itself. This deep-rooted history gives the aquarium an distinct, old-fashioned atmosphere that separates it from modern, purpose-built aquatic centers.
