Portail du château de Conflans

The portal of the Château de Conflans stands as a solitary stone gateway, its heavy masonry archway carved with the crest of the Archbishopric of Paris. It remains the lone survivor of a seventeenth-century episcopal palace that once dominated this river bend. When Archbishop François de Harlay bought the estate in sixteen eighty-two, he tore down the medieval ruins to build a retreat for clergy. During the French Revolution, the property became a prison, and later, a school for the deaf.
