The facade of the Palais de la Porte Dorée is covered in a massive, single stone bas-relief carved by Alfred Janniot. It depicts the flora, fauna, and people of the former French colonies in a rhythmic, golden-toned sequence. Built for the nineteen thirty-one Colonial Exposition, the building served to showcase the economic potential of France's overseas territories. Marshal Lyautey, the exhibition’s organizer, once kept a live crocodile in a small pond inside the main atrium to surprise visitors.
