Picpus Cemetery

A high stone wall encloses the Cimetière de Picpus, hidden away behind the unassuming facade of a convent. This is the final resting place for over one thousand victims of the French Revolution who were executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror. Among those buried in the common graves is the Marquis de Lafayette, whose wife’s family owned the land. His grave sits quietly in the corner, marked by the American flag that has flown there, without interruption, even through the German occupation.
