The Cinémathèque Française occupies a building of jagged, overlapping white stone blocks designed by Frank Gehry. It houses one of the world’s largest archives of film, equipment, and related artifacts. Henri Langlois began the collection in the nineteen thirties by scouring trash bins and studios to rescue nitrate film reels from being melted down for their silver content. He hid thousands of canisters in his apartment and various basements during the German occupation of Paris to prevent their destruction.
