La Halle Freyssinet

The building you are approaching is La Halle Freyssinet, a monumental structure that bridges the gap between industrial history and the future of technology. Built between 1927 and 1929, it served as a bustling freight terminal where goods were transshipped between trains and trucks to support the growing traffic of the nearby Gare d'Austerlitz. Its designer, the engineer Eugène Freyssinet, was a pioneer who used this project to experiment with pre-stressed concrete. The result is a structure of surprising lightness, featuring thin, graceful concrete vaults that in some places measure less than five centimeters thick. This daring structural design, which looks like a vast concrete umbrella, earned the building status as a protected historical monument in 2012.
