The Louise-Catherine is a concrete barge anchored on the Seine, recognizable by its long, flat deck and the stark, industrial lines designed by Le Corbusier in nineteen twenty-nine. Originally commissioned by the Salvation Army as a floating asylum for the homeless, it provided beds and soup for the destitute during the harsh Parisian winters. Madeleine Zillhardt bought the boat and named it after her partner, the painter Louise-Catherine Breslau. It served as a shelter for decades before eventually sinking at its mooring.
