Battle of Lutetia

In fifty-two before the common era, the muddy riverbank here became a killing field. Labienus, a lieutenant of Julius Caesar, led his legions against the Parisii tribe. The local warriors held the marshy ground, hoping to trap the Romans in the rising Seine waters. Instead, Labienus faked a retreat under cover of night, marched upstream, and crossed the river on rafts. He caught the Parisii in a pincer movement, effectively ending their resistance and securing this territory for the Roman Empire.
