The Paris Colonial Exposition of nineteen thirty-one featured a life-sized reconstruction of the Angkor Wat temple, rising from the edge of the Lac Daumesnil. French officials built this temporary city to showcase the resources and cultures of their overseas territories. Inside the temple, visitors walked through halls filled with artifacts and photographs intended to justify imperial expansion to the French public. A fire gutted the building just before the exposition ended, leaving behind only the concrete skeleton that stands in the woods today.
