The building you see, known as the Maison du Garde, stands at the edge of the Lac de Saint-Mandé. It once served a practical role as the home for the park keeper who maintained the surrounding grounds. Its presence highlights the shift in this area during the nineteenth century, when the former marshy ponds of the medieval period were transformed into the carefully manicured landscape of the Bois de Vincennes. The structure functions as a quiet reminder of the era when this entire perimeter was redesigned to provide a scenic, natural escape for the residents of the expanding city.
