This square honors the German-born political philosopher Hannah Arendt, who lived as a stateless refugee in France for eight years before escaping to the United States. During her time in Paris in the nineteen thirties, Arendt abandoned her purely academic life to work for organizations that helped Jewish youth flee to Palestine. Her experiences as a political exile in France profoundly shaped her later theories on the nature of totalitarianism and the fragility of human rights for those without the protection of a nation-state. By naming this public space for her, the city commemorates a thinker who famously argued that true political life requires the courage to appear in public and speak one's truth.
