The Cimetière Ancien de Charenton-le-Pont is a quiet sanctuary located right along the edge of the Bois de Vincennes. While it sits within the twelfth arrondissement of Paris, it remains an outlier because the city of Charenton-le-Pont maintains administrative control over the grounds. This arrangement persists as a legacy of the area's complex boundary history. The current site dates back to 1848. It was established after the local government was forced to relocate their previous burial ground to accommodate the construction of the new Paris to Lyon railway line. The rail expansion literally reshaped the landscape, necessitating the move of the entire cemetery to its present location on the fringes of the woods.
