Nelson Mandela Bridges

The Nelson Mandela Bridges consist of two parallel concrete structures that span the Seine River at a crucial point where it meets the Marne. These twin bridges serve as a vital transit link between the municipalities of Ivry-sur-Seine and Charenton-le-Pont. Construction on the first of these structures began in 1968, with the second being completed in 1974 to replace a much older crossing that once occupied the site. Originally known simply as the bridges of Conflans, they were renamed to honor the first democratically elected president of South Africa. This name serves as a local tribute to his legacy, marking a junction in the Paris transport network that manages significant daily traffic between the surrounding suburbs.
