Marne (river)

You are currently standing near the confluence of the Marne and the Seine, a junction that has defined the strategic importance of this area for centuries. Charenton-le-Pont takes its very name from the historic stone bridge that once controlled passage across the Marne here, serving as a critical gateway for defending Paris against forces approaching from the east. In the late nineteenth century, workers dredging the nearby riverbeds of the Seine made a remarkable discovery of a Bronze Age hoard. This collection of ancient weaponry, including swords, axes, and spearheads, confirmed that the river's path has been a site of human activity and conflict since long before the city of Paris took its modern form.
