Square Paul Eluard

Square Paul Eluard bears the name of one of the most influential French poets of the twentieth century. Paul Eluard was a founding pillar of the Surrealist movement and a deeply committed political activist who used his writing as a weapon during the Second World War. He spent the final years of his life living in a home on Avenue de Gravelle in this very town. When he died in November of nineteen fifty two, thousands of people spontaneously filled the streets of Paris to accompany his casket to the cemetery. His legacy as the Poet of Freedom remains tied to this corner of the suburbs where he chose to settle.
