Square Cuif sits as a triangle of green space wedged between stone apartment blocks in Saint-Maurice. It takes its name from Alfred Cuif, a local resident who served as a municipal councillor. During the Second World War, Cuif joined the French Resistance. He provided crucial help to those fleeing the occupation before he was arrested by the Gestapo. In August nineteen forty-four, he was executed at the nearby Fort de Vincennes. The park remains a quiet memorial to his final months.
