The Square de Conflans occupies the site of a former seventeenth century chateau that once served as the primary residence for the Archbishops of Paris. The original structure was a grand estate that stood directly on the banks of the Seine, acting as a site for high level political negotiations and religious councils. When the French Revolution erupted, the property faced confiscation and destruction, leaving behind only the landscaped grounds that now form the public space you see today.
