The Square de la Croix Rouge occupies a small, triangular patch of land where the Rue du Cherche-Midi meets the Rue de Sevres. Its name reaches back to a red cross that once stood near the nearby convent of the Daughters of the Holy Cross. In the nineteen thirties, the city installed a bronze fountain by sculptor Jules Dalou called The Triumph of Silenus. It depicts a drunken, reveling figure carried by nymphs and satyrs, celebrating a spirit of joyous excess.
