Jardin du Palais Royal

The Jardin du Palais Royal holds a long rectangle of gravel and linden trees behind high stone walls that cut the city noise. While kings once lived in the palace at its northern edge, Cardinal Richelieu built this garden in the sixteen thirties to enclose his private residence. In the seventeen eighties, the Duke of Orleans ringed the space with uniform limestone galleries to house shops and gambling dens. For years, police refused to enter this interior, making it a lawless, thriving hub for revolutionaries.
