The garden you are approaching is named after Armand David, a French Lazarist priest whose life straddled the worlds of deep faith and rigorous science. While he was sent to China in eighteen sixty-two to carry out missionary work, his curiosity for the natural world eventually transformed him into one of history's most successful explorers of unknown species. He spent his time traveling through remote mountains and frontiers, meticulously documenting and collecting thousands of plants and animals that were completely invisible to Western science at the time.
