Jardin du Luxembourg

The Jardin du Luxembourg began as a royal project in sixteen twelve, when Marie de Medici, the widow of King Henry the Fourth, sought to build a new residence that reminded her of her childhood in Florence. She commissioned the Luxembourg Palace to be built in the style of the Pitti Palace, intending the surrounding gardens to echo the layout and spirit of the famous Boboli Gardens. To bring her vision to life, she hired Florentine engineer Tommaso Francini, who designed the grounds as the first in France to be heavily influenced by the Italian Baroque style.
